SUMMARY:Homing in Winter - Solstice Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Restorying\, nature\, and soul for the Solstice\nDecember 13-15\, 2019\nRolling Ridge Study Retreat (near Harpers Ferry\, WV)\nWith Lindsay McLaughlin\, Julie Gabrielli\, Lisa Bardack\, and Katy Gaughan*\n  \n“Even amidst such devastating loss of culture\, languages\, wild lands\, and species—magic and mystery still occupy the borderlands of civilization\, waiting patiently for us to remember that we don’t know everything about the nature of so-called reality\, or even about our imaginative capacity to create other possibilities\, other ways of being human.” \nfrom Deep Winter by Geneen Marie Haugen \n“Since he means to come to a door he will come to a door” \nfrom Willful Homing by Robert Frost \n  \nSolstice\, meaning “sun stands still\,” in winter marks the moment when deepest night lingers over the Earth’s northern hemisphere as the sun seems to pause at its lowest point in the timeless cycle of light and dark.  Our ancestors knew in their bones the sacredness of this time.  They entreated the sun to move again\, heralding the light and warmth of spring\, even as they relished the revelatory dark. \nThis sense has slipped away from us in our modern hustle and bustle and has been profoundly lost to us amid the collapse of both nature and culture. \nYet the solstice can be a holy opportunity to stand still for a moment and recapture our connection to the slowly wheeling heavens\, and to the blessed dreaming Earth; it can be an invitation to come home to ourselves and our belonging\, a homing so necessary in these troubled times. \nOnce we lived by the cycles and seasons\, and they lived in us.  They comforted us\, shook us\, reassured us\, taught us.  On this retreat we reweave our connection to cycles and seasons\, to Earth and Heavens and Mystery.  Through restorying (the practice of listening to inner whispers and ancient tales and to the stories we hear in the wild around us) we may find our way home again. \nWe wander in solitude in the mystical\, enchanted forest\, seeking to be met by bare-branched oak\, hawk and owl\, frozen stream.  We attend to dreams that sing to us in the long nights.  We gather for ceremony and story\, for sacred dance\, drumming and song\, and for circles of shared wisdom. \nCost (includes six meals\, lodging\, and program):\n• $299 – single room\n• $249 – shared room (come with a friend or partner) \nThe retreat is for men and women and for people of all faiths and for those who might call themselves spiritual but not religious. \nThe retreat begins at 5 pm Friday (includes dinner) and concludes with lunch on Sunday (departure by 3 pm).  Early arrival on Friday (beginning at 2 pm) is encouraged. \n*Retreat Leaders for Homing in Winter: \nLindsay McLaughlin lives\, writes\, and tells stories at Rolling Ridge\, where for more than a decade she has led retreats that reconnect to nature and soul. \nJulie Gabrielli practices and teaches sustainable architecture and has long been an advocate of reconsidering the stories we live by. Her writing\, storytelling and retreats all explore the effects of immersion in sensory and imaginative kinship with the wild\, animate earth. \nLisa Bardack is a Sacred Circle Dance Facilitator and has cultivated a seasoned understanding of body movement as an instrument for joy\, healing and wisdom. \nKaty Gaughan is a gifted drummer and Drum Circle Facilitator whose mission is to bring people together to experience the restorative power of drumming and rhythm. \nTogether we bring a fascination with the power of story to renew our world. \nFor more information\, please email lindsay.rollingridge@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Sound & Silence Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Embodying prayer through the sacred rhythms of drumming\, chant\, nature and silence with Katy Gaughan and Tracy Seffers \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“After silence\, that which comes closest to expressing the inexpressible is music.”\n— Aldous Huxley \n“Do we know\, each one of us\, that we are bearers of the sacred beat of life? Do we know that we can honor that beat in one another and in all things? And do we know that it is this combination — of knowing that we are bearers of Presence and choosing to honor Presence in one another — that holds the key to transformation in our lives and world?”\n— John Philip Newell \nMusic & Movement … Drumming & Chant … Listening & Silence …. embodiments of prayer allowing us to experience the sacred beat of life connecting us to ourselves\, to one another\, and to God. \nThis weekend retreat invites us to honor that sacred beat and go deeper into intention and prayer as we learn how to play – and pray – with drums\, chant\, the labyrinth and silence. \nLed by Katy Gaughan and Tracy Seffers\, the rhythm of our time together will include introduction to drumming\, group drumming as prayer\, chant\, walking the labyrinth with drums\, free time in nature\, a fire circle and rhythm church. Woven throughout the weekend will be times of silence. Drums provided or bring your own. \nKaty Gaughan is a drummer and drum circle facilitator whose mission is to bring people together to experience the healing power of drumming and rhythm. Katy facilitates group drumming experiences for wellness\, community building\, worship and celebration. \nTracy Seffers lives near Rolling Ridge. She learned drumming from Katy\, and was inspired to become a drum facilitator herself\, using it as means to build community and to teach mindfulness\, playful creativity\, cooperation\, and stress management. She leads monthly drum circles and has served on the Friends of Silence board. She has drummed for several retreats at Rolling Ridge and Still Point. \nThe retreat begins at 5 pm on Friday (dinner at 7) and concludes with lunch on Sunday (departure by 3 pm). \nFee for the retreat is $299 and includes lodging\, six meals\, and program. Two people registering together and choosing to share a room may pay a reduced fee of $249 each. Camping further reduces fee to $229. \nWe offer a limited amount of scholarships. Please inquire. \nThis retreat will take place at Rolling Ridge Study Retreat and Still Point Mountain Retreat\, within the 1400-acre wilderness preserve of Rolling Ridge\, between the Appalachian Trail and the beautiful Shenandoah River. Here you will find welcome and comfort in the simple and lovely cabins and breathtaking sacred spaces. Rolling Ridge is accessible by car only. We are located one hour and 40 minutes from Washington\, DC\, in the tip of West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle.
